What “enhancing” a photo really means

Most disappointing photos are not broken. They are a little dark because the camera metered for the bright window behind the subject. They are a little flat because the light was overcast. They are a little orange because they were shot under a kitchen bulb, or a little soft because the phone chose a slow shutter speed. None of these are hard problems, and each of them responds dramatically to a correction that takes a fraction of a second. “Enhancing” a photo, in the everyday sense, means making those corrections: restoring the tonal range, neutralising the colour cast, and sharpening just enough to make edges crisp again.

There is also a second, deeper sense of the word. Sometimes a photo genuinely lacks information: it was shot on an old phone in bad light, compressed to death by a messaging app, or focused on the wrong thing. No slider can put back eyelashes that were never resolved, or recover the weave of a jacket that compression turned into blocks. That is the job of AI enhancement — a generative model that has seen millions of sharp photos and can rebuild fine detail that is consistent with what remains, while keeping the people in the picture recognisably themselves.

A good photo enhancer offers both, and is honest about which is which. The first kind runs on your own device, instantly and without limit, because it is arithmetic. The second kind calls a large model on a server, takes ten to thirty seconds, and is metered. Knowing which tool to reach for — and in which order — is most of the skill, and this guide is about exactly that.

Start with Auto enhance: what the one-click fix does

The first thing to try on every photo is Auto enhance. It reads the histogram — the distribution of dark and bright pixels across the image — and stretches the tonal range so that the darkest tones become genuinely black and the brightest genuinely white, without clipping detail at either end. Most photos straight from a phone use only part of the available range, which is why they look muddy; restoring the full range is the single biggest improvement you can make, and it is why Auto enhance so often looks like magic.

It then estimates the colour cast. Artificial light is rarely white: tungsten bulbs push everything orange, fluorescent tubes green, shade and overcast skies blue. The camera tries to compensate at capture time and often gets it partly wrong. Auto enhance finds neutral tones in the image and shifts the whole frame so they read as neutral, which is why skin tones suddenly look like skin and a white wall stops looking cream. Finally, it applies a gentle sharpening pass tuned to the resolution of the image, so edges regain their bite without the crunchy halos of oversharpening.

Step by step: enhancing a dull, dark or soft photo

Here is the sequence that works on almost any photo, from the phone snapshot to the scanned print. Each step is cheap and reversible, so move quickly through them and judge the result with Compare as you go.

  • Load the photo — drag it in, browse for it, or paste from the clipboard. Very large files decode in a second or two.
  • Press Auto enhance. Hold Compare to see what changed; on most photos the difference in tonal range alone is striking.
  • Open Light. Lift Shadows to open up a face lost in backlight; pull Highlights down to bring detail back into a bright sky or a white shirt.
  • Set the ends of the range with Whites and Blacks, then adjust Exposure for overall brightness and Contrast for punch. Small moves; the sliders render live at full resolution.
  • Open Colour. Use Temperature to warm a blue-tinted shot or cool an orange one, and Tint to correct any residual green or magenta.
  • Prefer Vibrance over Saturation to intensify colour: it boosts muted tones while protecting skin from turning orange.
  • Open Detail. Add a little Clarity for texture in fabric, brick and foliage; add Sharpness sparingly; use Noise reduction on night-mode or high-ISO shots.
  • If the photo is genuinely blurry, heavily compressed or noisy, open the AI brush, choose Enhance and press Apply. Wait 10 to 30 seconds.
  • Hold Compare again. If the AI result feels too processed, lower Strength so it blends with the original instead of replacing it.
  • Export as JPG at quality 85 to 92 for sharing, PNG for lossless, or WebP for the web — always at the full resolution of the original.

The Light panel: exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows

Light is where most of the work happens, and understanding what each slider does saves a great deal of aimless dragging. Exposure shifts every tone up or down by the same amount — it is the crudest control, useful when the whole frame is simply too dark or too light. Contrast pushes the dark tones darker and the bright tones brighter, adding depth to a flat image, but it is a blunt instrument that can crush shadows and blow highlights if pushed too far.

The four targeted sliders are far more useful. Highlights affects only the brightest regions: pulling it down recovers the texture in clouds, the detail in a white dress, or the pattern on a sunlit wall, without touching the rest. Shadows affects only the darkest regions: lifting it opens up a face in backlight or a room interior behind a window, revealing detail the camera captured but the exposure hid. Whites and Blacks set the absolute endpoints — the tone that becomes pure white and the tone that becomes pure black — and a small lift in Blacks is often what gives a flat photo its solidity.

Colour and Detail: white balance, vibrance, clarity and noise

Colour correction begins with white balance. Temperature moves the image along the blue–orange axis and Tint along the green–magenta axis; between them they can neutralise any cast. The trick is to find something in the frame that should be neutral — a white wall, a grey pavement, the whites of eyes — and adjust until it reads neutral on screen. Once the neutrals are right, skin, sky and foliage almost always fall into place on their own.

Then comes intensity. Saturation boosts every colour equally, which is why oversaturated photos have orange faces and radioactive grass. Vibrance is smarter: it boosts the colours that are muted and leaves the ones that are already strong alone, with extra protection for skin tones. For most photos, a moderate lift in Vibrance and no change to Saturation gives a rich, natural result. If you want a specific look, the Effects panel offers presets — Vivid, Film, Warm, Cool, Faded, Dramatic, Black & white — with an Intensity slider to dial them back.

Detail rounds off the on-device toolkit. Sharpness increases edge contrast at a fine scale and should be used with restraint; a photo that looks sharp at full zoom often looks over-etched when scaled down. Clarity works at a coarser scale, adding local contrast that makes textures pop without producing halos — try it on fabric, brick, bark and hair. Noise reduction smooths the coloured speckle of low-light shots; pair it with a little Sharpness afterwards so the image does not go waxy. Grain, in Effects, can put a little pleasing texture back if the result looks too clean.

When to call the AI: the Enhance operation and what it can rebuild

The on-device tools have a ceiling. They can only redistribute the information the camera captured; they cannot create detail that was never there. A face that is out of focus, a photo saved at a brutal compression setting, a picture taken in a dim restaurant on a five-year-old phone — these have lost information, and no slider will bring it back. This is where the AI Enhance operation earns its place.

Enhance sends the whole photo, downscaled to the model’s working size, to a generative image model along with instructions to sharpen details, correct exposure and keep the people in the picture exactly who they are. The model has learned from an enormous number of sharp, well-exposed photographs what eyelashes, fabric weave, foliage, lettering and skin texture look like, and it rebuilds plausible fine detail that is consistent with what remains. The result is then aligned and blended back onto your original at full size, so the export is the same dimensions as the photo you loaded. It is an AI operation, so it uses one of your twenty daily operations and takes ten to thirty seconds. Use it deliberately: after Auto enhance and the manual panels, not instead of them, and only on photos that genuinely need reconstruction. The Strength slider blends the AI result with your original, so if a face looks a fraction too smooth or a texture too invented, pull Strength back until the enhancement reads as a repair rather than a repaint. Troubleshooting: common enhancement mistakes and how to fix them

Enhancement is easy to overdo, and the most common failures come from pushing a slider past the point where it helps. If a photo looks worse after ten minutes than it did after Auto enhance, Undo back to that point and check the list below.

  • Faces look orange or sunburnt: you have used Saturation where Vibrance belonged. Reset Saturation and lift Vibrance instead.
  • Bright halos around edges: Sharpness is too high. Lower it and use Clarity for texture instead.
  • Skin looks waxy or plastic: Noise reduction is too strong, or the AI Enhance Strength is at maximum. Reduce either.
  • Shadows look grey and lifeless: Shadows was lifted without resetting the endpoint. Pull Blacks down slightly to restore depth.
  • The sky is a flat white sheet: pull Highlights down first; if no detail returns, the sky was clipped at capture and cannot be recovered — consider Replace with the AI brush.
  • Colours shifted after AI Enhance: the model corrected a cast you had grown used to. Compare with the original; a small Temperature nudge on the result usually settles it.

Privacy, resolution and the daily limit

Everything in the Light, Colour, Detail and Effects panels — and Auto enhance itself — runs inside your browser on your own graphics hardware. Nothing is uploaded, there is no queue, no counter and no limit. You can enhance an entire holiday album in one sitting, switch the Wi-Fi off halfway through, and the sliders keep working. This is not a promise in a privacy policy; it is a consequence of where the computation happens.

The AI Enhance operation is different, and the editor says so on the button. Because it is a whole-photo operation, the entire image is sent — downscaled to the model’s working size of up to 1536 pixels — processed, returned and discarded. Nothing is stored: no image, no prompt.
